Day 9 continues! On my earlier trips to Gwanghwamun Square, the latest I had been there was during the twilight hours where there was still a hint of sunlight remaining. I never got to check out the Admiral Yi Sun-Shin Fountain while it was running in total darkness so I always felt like returning when it was completed dark. Even though I walked around a lot earlier in the day, I must have gotten a second wind as I decided to go out again at night to check it out. Plus, it wasn’t too far away from where I was staying so it was convenient. I was going to head out via my usual route of walking to Dongnimmun Station and then take the subway but my aunt said that it was a lot easier to take the bus. I hadn’t taken the bus yet as I found taking the subway was really easy to use, logical and hard to get lost on as I had maps of all the lines and stations. I made it my intention to check out Gwanghwamun Square and Cheonggyecheon again but at night so after resting up and having dinner, I decided to go out again. I got to the area around the twilight hour as the remaining light was all about set to disappear.  As much as Seoul was beautiful during the day, there were spots that were equally, if not more beautiful at night.  During my trip, I visited Gwanghwamun Square and Cheonggyecheon on 4 separate occasion, today being my 2nd time.  Overall, it just seemed like a close, familiar and comfortable spot for me to return to and walk around. Right across the street from Gyeongbokgung and Gwanghwamun is Gwanghwamun Square . I think I first saw Gwanghwamun Square in pictures during one of the World Cups where there was a sea of red shirts surrounding the statue of King Sejong and spilling out on to the streets. More recently, I saw Gwanghwamun Square featured in one of the action sequences during the KBS drama Iris . You’ll probably noticed this as a repeating pattern through my blog whereby I first saw something or got the inspiration to visit somewhere in Seoul from watching a Korean TV show, drama or movie. Gwanghwamun Square, is just that, a square block (or more accurately, a rectangular block) defined by 4 busy streets on all sides. The contents of the square transforms depending on the season. During the summer the square contains a large flower bed and during the winter, a portion gets converted into an ice rink. The constants of the square though are 2 statues commemorating 2 historical figures from Korea’s past. ...
